Students Explore Ministry Opportunities at Field Education Fair

September 19, 2019

This week Emmanuel students connected with ministry professionals at the Field Education Fair, held on campus on Wednesday and Thursday. Representatives from churches and ministry organizations gathered in the J. H. Sherk Education Centre to offer volunteer and employment opportunities.

Students are required to attain practical ministry experience that is guided by the school. The annual Fair, led by Field Education Coordinator Mark Thornton, is designed to help students find churches or ministries where they can gain this experience.

“Following the example of Jesus, who not only taught and modelled ministry to his followers but also actively involved them in serving others, Field Education enables students to apply their academic learning to real-life contexts,” Thornton said. “This involvement enables them to discover and develop their gifts, abilities, and passion for ministry while learning from experienced and knowledgeable mentors.”

Among the many representatives were Mike and Lauren Wasyluk of Country Hills Church in Kitchener. They have been involved with Emmanuel Field Education students in the past and have been pleased with the outcomes. This year the couple attended the Fair in the hopes of finding someone they can invest in spiritually.

The Fair also featured some new faces. This year Forward Church, a congregation with locations in Cambridge and Kitchener, joined the event for the first time. Kristen Christopherson, who serves in children’s and family ministry at Forward, attended the Fair to speak with students who might be interested in ministering to kids.

Students capitalized on the opportunity to find potential placements and internships, many leaving the Fair with names and contact information of representatives they may follow up with. Others have already secured arrangements for their Field Education courses.

With the academic year underway, many students will soon begin placements throughout the Kitchener-Waterloo area and beyond.
